Basketball Lay-up Fundamentals

In basketball, ‘Lay-up’ is the fundamental action. It is unfortunate that is has not got attention of people when they try to improve overall in the game. The current trend is the importance through on the stylish boating movements and not on the basics. It is high time that players start strengthening the fundamental techniques of shooting lay-ups to score better. Here are a few important aspects related to lay-ups that will support you to enhance your overall skill in the game.

It is imperative to practice Lay-ups sincerely

No match will entice you with the opportunity to run slowly to the basket and shoot an unchallenged lay-up. The majority of the lay-ups are rapid shots when you challenge your defender who would always obstruct your path to the basket. If you are not serious while practicing the lay-ups, you can be rest assured to miss the lay-up in the real-time match. This is because you might jump off the wrong foot or that you had shot the lay-up very hard due to limited time constraint. It is only waste of time practicing without seriousness. Ensure to employ the perfect technique adjusting to the game-pace when you shoot the lay-ups during your warm ups.

Use both your hands to shoot effective lay-ups.

It would be wise to use both your hands make your lay-up shot an effective one. There are more chances of your shot getting block, if you drive the ball to the back on the left hand side of the floor and trying to shoot a lay-up using your right hand. So, it becomes important to position your body between you and your defender. In this case, if your defender tries to block your shot, it will end-up as a foul.

Be Choosy

It would be wise not to use the same type of lay-up in every situation. This will deprive you, of your advantage. Using different types of lay-ups will make you tough to be defended during specific situations. For instance, you have a tough defender, who, at every shot of your lay-ups defends you and you want to head fake so you can shoot a ‘power lay-up’ (where you go off 2 feet and try to draw a foul) or at times on a break you would want to actually shoot a lay-up with the opposite hand of the side of the basket you are moving towards. For example, you are planning for shot off. So, you shall drive the ball quickly to the basket and use your right hand when going up to the left hand side of the basket else try doing it vice versa. The thumb rule here is to be choosy when it comes for the selection of a lay-up. It would be wise to choose a lay-up, you are comfortable shooting. This will enable you to tap every possible advantage you get, during the game.
