You would have come across the arguments regarding steroids in baseball. Few questions would have arose in you mind like, Does steroid improve the performance of an athlete? What are the prospective side effects of using steroids? Is there any record available on the consequences of steroids? Are athletes harming themselves by using it? Etc.
This calls for the need to comprehend the term steroid and the reasons as to why do players to use it. Anabolic steroids are the synthetic form of the testosterone (male hormone) and these testosterone in its normal form instigates and enhances muscle development. When testosterone is supplemented with steroids, it helps in muscle building, fat reduction and entices stamina, which helps the player to have an edge over the competition. Especially, in baseball, steroids are considered to provide the power to hit the ball to the maximum extent possible.
The side effects of steroids range from psychological to physical. Psychologically, steroid usage leads to depression, imbalance in the mood and increases temper (alias roid rage), deep aggression and agitation.
Physically, steroids increase the muscle weight and stamina but the side effects would comprise - intense liver damages, cancer, skin diseases, intense hair gain/loss and Testicular atrophy (shrinking) etc.
Steroids entice rewards but with a level of risk involved. The rewards would include a rapid way to increase you muscle mass, enhanced performance & stamina. The risks involved are – steroid could lead to permanent morbidity and psychotic episodes like restlessness, agitation, imbalanced moods, depression and self-assassination etc. Do you really feel that the rewards are in power with the side effects caused? The answer is no. But the unfortunate aspect is that in-spite of all these side effects; athletes do use steroids to gain rapid luck and popularity. It is a known fact that using steroids in baseball would route your career path in the down trend and would not help you to gain luck or fame.
Even today, there are arguments in relation to use of steroids by the famous baseball players like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Gray Sheffield and others. There had also been another controversy that Greg Anderson (Barry’s friend) had been providing Barry with an untraceable steroid known as ‘the cream’ or ‘the clear’. And many raised the query as to – did the steroid enhance his performance in the games? We are able to extract few conclusions from this.
Firstly, are there any proofs to prove the use of steroid in the field of baseball? As of now, no. Before, deriving conclusions, we need to analyze few aspects. Barry had performed exceptionally setting a single season record. Since this has been achieved by an average player scoring around 35 homers, you may not be in a position to explain it. Instead, we can only assume that he has attained the capacity to achieve his dream target.
Lets take the case of Roger Maris. From a guy who never scored many, he went on to hit 61 home runs. But the world never thought that he had used a performance enhancer. They were convinced that he was having a dream season that probably comes once in one’s career. Could this be said of both Barry and Mark? It could be concluded that they too were having a dream run and probably, rightly so.
Unless and until these are proven with sufficient back-up evidences, we cannot conclude what has made the athlete to perform in such a manner. It is very difficult to perform like that across the high level days. But, it calls for intensely consistent contacts. It also demands for strong fundamentals. Anyway, we are very fortunate to witness such remarkable performances of the great athletes of baseball.
According to me, Steroids should be taken off the mind. There are instant rewards like increase in muscle mass, stamina etc. but, the physical and the psychological side effects would lasts long till the end of your life. The thumb rule is that a game must be played the way it is supposed to be played. Do it with pride, tribute ,self-esteem and above all - avoid use of steroids!
